Neuroplasticity Techniques and Healing
What the heck is neuroplasticity?
Neuroplasticity refers to the brain's natural ability to alter the neural connections within it through growth and reorganization. New neural connections can always be created, and old neural connections can be pared away when no longer needed. There are techniques that have been developed to take advantage of how the brain naturally changes itself, and they can be used to release old, stored emotions, change emotional memories, and shift limiting beliefs. These techniques are also referred to as brain rewiring, limbic system retraining, nervous system retraining, etc.
How can you use neuroplasticity techniques to heal your body?
The brain has an incredibly powerful role in controlling the functioning of the body. It does this primarily by communicating with the body via the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system has three branches, two of which convey to the body that we are not safe (the fight/flight or freeze responses) and one of which conveys that we are safe to relax (the rest, digest, and heal branch).
Our animal ancestors were pretty much always in the "rest, digest, and heal state" because they really only perceived danger in short bursts of truly life-threatening situations, such as being chased by a predator or nearly falling off of a cliff. Modern humans are sending the signals to their bodies of being unsafe the majority of the day due to long to-do lists, deadlines at work, relationship issues, financial issues, politics and societal dynamics, health challenges, always focusing our thoughts on the future and the past, encountering subconscious triggers of our past traumas, and a host of other reasons!
When this happens day in and day out without our intervention, the brain can get stuck in a loop of sending chronic fight, flight, or freeze signals to the body, which dramatically deranges the normal functioning of pretty much all of the vital organs and systems of the body. In a chronic fight-or-flight response, initially, people notice anxiety and sleep disruption, but there's much more going on than that! Detoxification, digestion, tissue repair, and other processes are shut down. Hormones, brain function, and immune function become imbalanced. The heart races, blood pressure goes up, and blood is shunted away from the vital organs to the muscles to help us fight or flee for our lives. Can you see the long-term ramifications of this? Chronic dysfunction of all the major systems of the body, which is exactly what I saw in the majority of my chronically ill patients, and it's exactly what happened to me when I became so sick at the age of 19. A chronic freeze response is quite different, but no less detrimental to health. In modern human beings this will cause chronic fatigue, a slowed metabolism, depression, and fibromyalgia-like pain to name a few of the manifestations. Many people alternate between the fight/flight and freeze states, and their symptoms flip flop.
However, it doesn't have to be this way! We don't have to be in a chronic state of stress, even if our life is throwing a lot of challenges our way. The feeling of being safe enough to relax is based on PERCEPTION and perception is based on your PAST EXPERIENCES and BELIEFS. For instance, if you had a terrible car accident and ever since then, the car has not felt like a safe place, you're going to go into fight/flight or freeze whenever you get into a car, while another person doesn't. We now have ways of changing these perceptions through neuroplasticity techniques, so that our nervous systems can feel calm in our everyday lives in all non-life-threatening situations, and therefore the body can finally heal!!
